Wow! There are a lot of storytellers out there, but L.S. King is a writer! Her natural style, likeable characters, and non-stop action make Deuces Wild: Beginners’ Luck a winner for any reader.
The story is a classic tale of revenge and friendship. When mobsters attack his home, local farm-boy, Slap, finds an unlikely ally in Tristan, the space smuggler. One is open and innocent, the other dark and mysterious. One is motivated by grief and trying to do the right thing, the other by the challenge of danger and profit. Together they will take on anyone from gangsters to royalty and in the end, find out that everyone needs friends, even if you don’t want them.
Perhaps the high point in the midst of all the fast-paced action is watching the development of Slap and Tristan’s relationship. L.S. King does a truly amazing job of both humorously and subtly describing how two such opposite individuals can become the best of friends.
The one thing I wish we had in this story was more on Tristan’s background. We know quite a bit about Slap from the beginning, but only get a few hints here and there about Tristan. Bu hopefully we’ll get more of Tristan’s story in the follow-up book, Deuces Wild: Stacking the Deck.
For my more conservative readers, I have to say that there may be some allusions to Christian themes in this book, but there is no particularly Christian content. There is a lot of violence, but virtually no cursing.
There is also a rape in the story, but L.S. does a wonderful job of treating this occurrence with both appropriateness and surprising sensitivity. You’ll see what I mean when you find out who it is that is raped.
All in all, I give Deuces Wild: Beginners’ Luck an unequivocal recommendation of Excellent. If you’re looking for a fun adventure with great writing, this is where it’s at. I will definitely be looking forward to the next installment, Deuces Wild: Stacking the Deck.
Deuces Wild: Beginners’ Luck is available from Double-Edged Publishing.
